The NCPM is a 4 step systematic, evidence-based, problem-solving method used by dietetic professionals to make decisions with regard to the nutrition care of clients in disease states and to think critically to:

  • Address nutrition related problems
  • Provide safe and effective nutrition care

4 Steps:

  1. Nutrition Assessment
    • Collecting and reviewing background information on client
  2. Nutrition Diagnosis
    • Formulating nutrition diagnosis statement.
    • There are several key “Nutrition Problem Statements” that can be used to make a nutrition diagnosis:
      • Loss of appetite
      • Chewing problems
      • Dysphagia
      • Failure to gain weight
      • Knowledge deficit
      • Malnutrition
